The Lobel Center’s Famous Lives of Ancient Greece introduces students to Greek history through a book of historical biographies of the great leaders, warriors, and philosophers of the Classical World. In Black Ships Before Troy, Rosemary Sutcliff offers a retelling of Homer’s Iliad that is written for young adults. The Lobel Center has developed an original teacher’s guide to the full text of Sutcliff’s work, including vocabulary lists, grammar lessons, and extensive commentary on the similarities and differences between the Homeric legends and the Jewish tradition. The Wanderings of Odysseus is Rosemary Sutcliff’s adaptation of Homer’s Odyssey. As with Black Ships Before Troy, the Lobel Center has developed an original teacher’s guide to the full text of Sutcliff’s work, including vocabulary lists, grammar lessons, and extensive commentary on the similarities and differences between the Homeric legends and the Jewish tradition. In the 1920s, Dorothy Mills wrote a series of history textbooks that are still used in classical middle schools around the English-speaking world. The Lobel Center’s version of her Greek history textbook provides major additions to the text which cover the history of the Jewish people in the time of ancient Greeks.
